Two Maine politicians stood up to Trump and I’m proud to be a Mainer.

Reading the news has been overwhelmingly frustrating lately as a transgender person because it feels like there really isn’t anyone to speak up for me or defend me but last night I opened my phone to a video of Governor Janet Mills of Maine saying that she will not comply with Trump’s “Keeping Men Out of Women’s Sports” executive order and will follow state and federal laws only, which is how the United States is supposed to work.
Institutions have lately been folding to pressure based on words only and not because they are actually required to and what Janet Mills did has given me hope.
Today I opened my laptop and searched the web to see updates on the situation to find that Angus King has said that we are in a constitutional crisis and told his colleagues in the senate to “wake up”
Of course, now there’s the issue of Maine’s federal funding. Trump said Maine isn’t going to get any federal funding and I’m unsure how Maine will survive if such a thing happens. But it’s not like Maine would survive otherwise considering how awfully Trumpler is running things.
Dishonorable mention: Susan Collins.
Susan Collins opposed Trump’s threat to withhold funding however at the same time opposed trans athletes in sports citing it to be a “matter of biology”. There should be restrictions on transgender women in sports but outright bans are absurd and I cannot in my right mind endorse Collins as a politician or a human being even. Transgender athlete bans are a wolf in sheep’s clothing with the goal of banning trans people from other parts of life and setting the stage for genocide.
This pissed me off. It’s expected from Collins unfortunately and she’s done a lot of other bullshit things while cosplaying as moderate.
I’m proud to be a Mainer.
Governor Mills defied Donald Trump to his face and stuck to the law which is brave and shows integrity. Maine stuck to the law at the threat of losing federal funding and this sets an important precedent for other states.
